ARE YOU PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY FIT?
On 3rd September 2009, the Healthy Lifestyle Campaign has been successfully launched by Dr Chong Beng Keok, Principal of KDU College Penang and Dr Azizah Bt. Ab. Manan, Ketua Penolong Pengarah Unit, Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Pulau Pinang with the slogan “Stay Healthy, Live Longer”. This campaign mainly focuses on Anti-Smoking, Influenza A(H1N1) Awareness and HIV/AIDS Awareness. The purpose of this Healthy Lifestyle Campaign is to create awareness among the students and public on the importance of staying healthy.
Living a healthier life can improve the quality of your life. Feeling physically fit and having control over your own life can greatly increase your mental health as well. The way you are living now and your habits are the reasons you are not feeling and looking as healthy as you should.
Dr. Azizah (Ketua Penolong Pengarah, Unit Penyakit Tidak Berjangkit, Jabatan Kesihatan Negeri Pulau Pinang) mentioned that, “To help the smokers to quit smoking, the Penang State Health Department are providing quit smoking clinics which are located at the health clinics. There are total of 12 Quit Smoking Clinics and these clinics are conducted by trained medical personnel. Smokers will undergo counseling sessions and selected few are assisted by medication to reduce their nicotine addiction.”
In Malaysia, the prevalence of smoking in 2006 was reported to be 21.5%. This is a big number considering the various legislative and preventive measures taken by the government. The prevalence of tobacco consumption in Penang also noted to be increased over the years.
In collaboration with Pejabat Kesihatan Timur Laut on organizing this event, there were number of activities lining up on the launching day started from 9.00am to 1.00pm such as Body Mass Index (BMI) checking, Blood Pressure Checking, Healthy Consultancy, Pap Smear Test and Health Talk on H1N1 Awareness by Penolong Pegawai Kesihatan Persekitaran (Kanan), Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah Timur Laut, Mr. Alexander Selvam.
This campaign is an on-going event which will be held in the whole month of September 2009. Video and pictorial exhibition will be on-going at Foyer Ground Floor of KDU College. Public and media are welcome to attend these exhibition and talk. Admission is free!
