A Mother's Love

Written by Poh Wen Bin, Student

motherpicB

My mother, a mother of four, is the best mom I ever would have. Like any typical Asian mothers, my mother plays the role of a housewife and she is the pillar of strength in the family. She usually would manage the household ensuring all problems are resolved, sometimes, she acts as a mediator in family disputes and she is an encourager when we are emotionally feeling low.

It was not easy for her to sacrifice her profession to be a housewife. My mom has endeavoured and sacrificed a lot of her own interest to build comfort in our home. Hence, I would take this opportunity to say, “Mom, I thank you for your sacrifices and the hardships you have been through.”

Every year there is one special day dedicated for mothers, and that's "Mother’s Day". This day is a great opportunity for children of all ages to show their appreciation for the work and love of a mother. Gifts and cards, often handmade with care, are given as a sign of love. Thus, I would like to present a poem dedicated to my mom.

Thank you for your love throughout the years,

Happiness comes slowly, day by day.

All you and Dad have given me remains

Not distant from the wellspring of my tears.

Kindnesses can never go away,

Your love and care will never be held with disdain,

and words of encouragement will always be held dear.

There is also a saying, which is, "God could not be everywhere and so he invented mothers". These are great inspirational words to mothers across the globe. To all mothers, Happy Mother’s Day! To my mom, I love you, mom! I will study hard at KDU College to fulfill my role and your expectation as your son.

BE A RADIO DJ FOR A DAY

Reported by: Valerie Ooi, Programme Counsellor

If they have always admired their favourite radio deejays and have dreamt to be another Hunny Madu, well, students from SMJK Tsung Wah certainly had such a chance at KDU's Radio Broadcasting room. Writing scripts under the guidance of Ms Maha (lecturer), the top 3 winners of scriptwriting for Valentine's Day, Father's Day, and Earth Day, had the chance to be a RADIO DJ FOR THE DAY. The prize? They had their recording done by Mr Hilmyzam and a copy of the cd was given to the school.

The other group of 25 students had a roaring time with robotics at their session FUN WITH ROBOTS together with some KDU engineering students and their lecturer, Mr. Siva.

Impressed with the Moot Court, they said it was awe-inspiring. If they had seen a mock court in session, they would have been even more inspired by the law students' excellent oratorical skills. However, as time was running short, they were given a short presentation of the KDU College courses and celebrated Teacher's Day with a cake and pastries, with compliments from the School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts.

A team of three KDU students brought home a Gold Medal from the recent FHA in Singapore (read more about KDUs involvement). The Food Hotel Asia is one of the most prominent events in the hospitality world. Ooi Shar Mayn, Amanda Yuen and Julia Ung took part in the Dream Team Challenge and tell us, how they experienced the event.

(L-R): Dream Team Winners - Amanda, Julia and Shar Mayn

For those who do not know what the Dream Team challenge is, could you explain it?
Shar Mayn: The Dream Team challenge is a competition that requires a team of three: a chef, a bartender and a service staff member. Teams should try to provide the ultimate dining experience for their guests, whilst maintaining great team work and good communication with them. It is like an actual restaurant service, based on a theme, with a three course menu. I was the bartender, Amanda was our service personnel and Julia was the Chef.

Hasif: “I Love You, Ma!”

By Hasif Hadaie Hatim, Student KDU Foundation 609, Centre for Pre-University Studies

Before I begin, I just want to say, “I love you, Ma!” If I start to elaborate about my mom, then I would have written a book or two. No other beings could be compared to a mother’s love, for she is a nurse, saint, teacher, master chef, caretaker wrapped into one beautiful package which I call ‘mama’. I believe that all of us feel the same way about our mom as we love her nags which sound like music to our ears filling up our soul with joy so “Thanks Ma!”.

My mother, the Encourager.

By Kh’ng Weng Shan, Student, KDU Foundation 609, Centre for Pre-University Studies

I believe that in this world there is surely one person who inspires you. That person could be your parents, your friends or your teachers. For me, the person who inspires me much is my mother.

I must admit that while I was studying in Form 5, I had not endeavoured to put much effort in my studies although my mum had always encouraged me to do so. I would leave exam revision to the very last minute despite my mum’s pleas to prepare for my exams.

Mother's Day Special - The Rock Of My Life

By AISHATH THAANEEF SHIRAN
- University of Tasmania, Bachelor of Law

The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of my mother is her altruistic soul as she is the kind of person who always demonstrates great willingness to help out at her best capacity to anyone in need of help. Being her only child, my mother has brought me up with great care and taught me well to overcome hardships in my life while teaching me invaluable life lessons along the way.

Mother's Day Special : You're My Inspiration

By KELSEY KUEK - University of Tasmania, Bachelor of Law

‘Witty’, ‘attractive’ and ‘inspiring’ are just some of the words to describe my mom. Born and raised in a small town in Ipoh, Perak, she came to Kuala Lumpur to work at a brave, young age of 21. She was introduced to my dad by my aunt who happened to work in the same company at that time. After much courting (according to my dad), my parents finally became an item and got married when my mom was 25. It was only 3 years after that did my parents have their first child, me! She gave up her job at Sri Sutra Travel just to take care of me. Talk about sacrifice!

My mom has always been awesome in many ways. To me, she has always been a friend, a sister and a mother. 3 in 1! No daughter could ever ask for more and I would like to add that I am very blessed to have her as my mom. Another thing I admire about my mom is her self-control. Many a times I marvel at her ability to handle strain and tension from taking care of her in-laws and my nuclear family at the same time. In fact, she has never yelled or raised her hand on my sister and me even when it came to disciplining us, and we didn’t turn out too bad, if I must say so myself. Ha-ha!

I could write a book and still won’t be able to give my mom the credit she deserves. Likewise, I could go on and on about how much I admire my mom and not am able to finish. However I’d like to dedicate a poem to her.

I may not be the perfect daughter,
That you might have asked God for,
But mom, you’ve been the perfect mother,
And no daughter could ever ask for more.

The examples you set are still with me,
I’d never want any other,
Thank you for all that you have taught me,
I’m ever so blessed to call you ‘Mother’,

You have my love forever,
I adored you from the start,
It’s a privilege to be your daughter,
Dear mother of my heart.

Mother's Day Special : Unconditional Love

By WONG SU-NING - University of Tasmania, Bachelor of Law

Being the youngest at home has always made me dear to my parents. My mum has the most unpredictable and unpleasant mood swings. Despite her anger at us, she has always been the greatest mum of all.

Mother's Day Special : My Mother, My Love

By TAN ZHY WEI - University of Tasmania, Bachelor of Law

Every year there is one special day that is put aside for all the mothers in the world. “Nothing’s gonna change my love for you, you ought to know by now how much I love you”, I sing to myself, trying to sound like Glenn Medeiros.

KDU's International Food Fest

Written by: Ann Teoh

KDU Square turned into a splendid food village overnight. Were there fairies, pixies or leprechauns working on the night of 28th April (or rather, the wee hours of 29th April)? Booths were creatively decorated and styrofoam dolls and lanterns were handpainted.

Placards flashing the words "WTF" hung at every nook and corner of the campus. You would have thought it could be some World Tennis Federation or World Taekwondo Federation champions coming to the event. Hmm.. it was not. Actually, it meant "WHERE'S THE FOOD?"
