Job Discovery Wizard

Written by: Ann Teoh
"We are the extroverts!"

“How well do you know yourself?” Dr Tan Hui Leng, an assessment expert (who is also the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs) posed this question to the students from Frontier Learning Centre, at the “Job Discovery Wizard” workshop held on 26th January, 2011. “Let’s do this simple test to find out more about you. Are you:

• An Extrovert or Introvert?
• A person who uses Sensing or Intuition?
• A Thinking person, or do you follow your Feelings?
• Judging or Perceiving?”

Dr. Tan,"When you discover yourself, you'll know the type of career that suits you."

Money and Career

written by Ann Teoh

Carol Yip, the Founder and CEO of Abacus for Money and the author of “Smart Money-User” and “Money Rules” (in 3 languages – English, Malay and Chinese), spent her Saturday morning talking to teenagers and their parents on the topic, “How to talk to your kids about money and career” at KDU University College, Section 13 campus. Before the start of the talk, Dr. Todd Nelson (Head of School of Business and Social Sciences) got everyone to loosen up with an ice breaking game of, "You catch me, you catch me not."

Dr Nelson, "Let's see how quick you can be."

Carol Yip addresses parents and young adults
on the subject of Money and Career.

Playing the Devil’s Advocate

With no-holds-barred and playing the role of the Devil’s Advocate, she spoke sincerely, firmly and knowledgeably, about how children and their parents need to communicate with each other about money and career, and that parents need to treat their children as adults in understanding the value of money. After all, it is an important subject which is not taught in schools at all and hence, young adults do not understand about financial problems and the financial mistakes they make. She revealed that AKPK (a counselling agency set up by Bank Negara) had commissioned her to write “Money Sense” (a complimentary copy was given to each participant) as there are many people who do not know how to manage their money. As money and careers are inter-twined, she advised that young people need to understand themselves better, and what they want in life. And if they do not know better, then a career profiling will help them. A lot of us do not know ourselves well, to the point of not having the right career.

What's the connection between The Sound of Music and KDU's UNSW Foundation Year Certificate Presentation Ceremony?

Climb every mountain,
Search high and low,
Follow every highway,
Every path you know.

Climb every mountain,
Ford every stream,
Follow every rainbow,
'Till you find your dream.

A dream that will need
All the love you can give,
Every day of your life
For as long as you live.

Who would have thought that Dr. Chia (Dep. Vice Chancellor - Strategic Development & Enterprise) would quote The Sound of Music in her speech at the recent UNSW Foundation Year Certificate Presentation Ceremony held last Friday.

However old the song is, the lyrics and what it holds were very apt for the occasion.

Pretty much a timeless classic that we all know by heart. But sorry, Doris Day, here at KDU UC, we beg to differ.

With a little bit of planning, a dash of passion, a sprinkle of enthusiasm and hard work, the future is DEFINITELY ours to see. Want to know how? Well, you should definitely make the time and head on over to our Damansara Jaya Campus this 20th or 26th January for our CAREER DISCOVERY CLINIC.

"Be Our Guest" Wow Classroom Experience - Day 3

written by: Ann Teoh

Dr Todd Nelson

Which Civil Rights Should We Keep?

If it had not been for the first amendment to the US Constitution, which guarantees all US citizens the right to assemble and speak freely, Martin Luther King Jr, would not have been able to deliver his famous “I have a dream” speech when he organised a massive march in Washington in 1963.

Using video and music, the guests were introduced to America’s Constitutional Bill of Rights by Dr. Todd Nelson, Head of the School of Business and Social Sciences , on Day 3 of the “Be Our Guest” Wow Classroom Experience.

Click on the following links to You Tube and you can listen to the rap and hip hop songs on Bill of Rights.

WOW CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE!

written by: Ann Teoh

If there were tears at kindergartens and primary schools as it was the first day of school in January 2011, it was certainly a different scenario at KDU University College. And rightly so! Fresh-faced, eager-looking teenagers filled with friendly smiles, thronged the hallways and Lecture Hall E at their first day in KDU University College.

They were joined by many school leavers who had just completed their SPM exams and who were in a dilemma trying to decide the most suitable programme to study. They have to take a host of factors into consideration: cost, transport, lecturers’ experience, the reputation of the university college, the transferability of credits, and the career pathways.

A 3-day series of "Be Our Guest" WOW classroom experiences were hosted for them to help them make that crucial decision. For Day One, if they were unsure what career direction to head for, Ms Nicole Noh (Counsellor) did certainly set them on course with her talk on Career Profiling . Using the RIASEC test, the students soon discovered their personalities and what they enjoy doing most.
Dividing them into their personality-groups, they were given some materials to create a transport model. True to their personality profiles, each group either artistically created a unique mode of transportation or systematically and methodically modelled one, or as the one and only one Investigator-type personality soon discovered, he could analyse how he could plan and design one single-handedly. Those who belong to the Social type personality, would chat their ways to completing their project (or almost completing), and the Entrepreneurial type would be persuading each other that his idea is the best.

Memories are made of these

written by: Sophie Lee, Student
Class: AL 310 (Arts), School of Pre-University

“No way, it’s free of charge??” These were the exact words I uttered upon hearing about the trip to Port Dickson, and students from all pre-university intakes were generously invited to join in the fun with the lecturers.

There was a sense of anticipation in the air as jovial students crowded around the winner’s circle, and as a member of this shared excitement I could not help but felt my spirits being lifted despite having carried a back-breaking luggage. Some of our friends had brought cameras and guitars to seal the memories of this trip in either photographs or songs.

Upon reaching Avillion Hotel after a two-hour bus ride, I was not surprised to find that our group members were slowly easing up due to the serenity of the whole atmosphere - the wind was gently cajoling closely-knitted trees to life, the clouds in the sky drew apart revealing a calm ,azure canvas of sky. These elements had combined together to create the most picturesque scene. I could get used to this, I thought, while unloading the luggage.

The few days our group spent in Port Dickson blew by like the sea breeze. One moment ,we were gathered in the lobby awaiting our key cards, then we were strolling along the beach in search of sea creatures, and in the next moment, we were exchanging ghost stories with newly-made friends and roaming from room to room in search of entertainment as night fell. Guitar-strumming sessions were played live in one of the rooms while adoring fans sat amiably side by side with dreamy expressions.

At the beach, our heart rates rose when we zoomed across untamed waves acquiring saltwater face washes on a 3-person float. My heart almost burst when a close friend of mine went overboard via a back flip. No worries though, she came through unharmed. It was also interesting to observe lecturers, out of their usual work masks and demeanor, but with the same patience and guidance as they had in KDU. Well, I hope you can imagine how memorable these events were to a girl usually preoccupied with staying at home watching TV and drama reruns during the holidays.

However, all good things will eventually come to an end - I realised this as I woke up one day, to the zipping of suitcases and the rummaging of personal belongings of my roommates. I was half happy that I’d be leaving with a handful of memories to call my own when I went back, but the other half of me wished that we could have stayed longer to prolong this state of contentment. Ah, well... I would have to make do with these handful of memories. This trip has shown me what college life is supposed to be like, and I’m glad to have been a part of this KDU outing instead of being somewhere else.

OMG! A Pre- U Charity Play

Dear all,

As you know, the Pre-U department is organising this event to contribute to the children's cancer fund. The play is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s the Taming of the Shrew. So the mission? To raise funds to help our cancer-battling friends! You can help by purchasing these tickets and attending the event (a black tie event with a 3-course Italian menu on 29th Jan 2011). Below is a video prepared by our own dear Nazmi Shaarani for the promotion of this event.

Do feel free to donate for this charitable cause. Donations can be in cash or kind (we have a list of items provided by the ward). The contact person for donation and sponsorship is Kelvin Hong Meng.
