KDU UC Damansara Jaya Campus Buzzes With Power Chef and Hot Cat Tour Competition!

Our School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts definitely had a lot up its sleeves (or chef’s hat) yesterday!

‘Why?’ we hear you asking…

Well, not only did we have the finals for the 2011 Power Chef Competition, but we also had the Hot Cat Tour running simultaneously at our Damansara Jaya campus.

The annual Power Chef competition, which is in its 9th running year now, aimed to unearth and showcase the culinary talents and flair of teenagers, and was opened to secondary school students.

Each year, the Power Chef gets bigger and, of course, better! How much better? Well, this time around, we’re sending the champions to the land of Swatch watches and Swiss army knives! You got that right, the participants had to cook their way to winning an all-expenses paid trip to Switzerland!

So great was the response this year, that we had to have it over a span of three weeks! This goes to show its increasing popularity among the secondary schools.

The preliminaries were held on the 26th March, where there were 67 teams from 25 schools across Selangor and KL, battling for a spot in the quarter finals held in the following weekend.  The semifinals yesterday saw 16 teams of two people competing to secure one of the 5 spots for the finals and battle it out to grab the Power Chef 2011 Champion title.

Another Doctor in the house

Written by: Loh Teck Hua, Lecturer, School of Business and Social Sciences

Dr Todd Nelson getting serious again after a round of jokes

You hold staff meetings in the staff room, that's what the rule book says. Of course, if that is old school there is the conference room, the board room or the lecture theatre. Well, the KDU School of Business and Social Sciences (SBSS) did not go by the book this time – the staff meeting was held at Starbucks at Section 13! That's a novel way to loosen up, let yourself go and bond. More than just bonding the occasion was to formally – or informally – introduce Dr Goh Pek Chen, the new Academic Head, to the team from SBSS. And amongst those welcoming Dr Goh was another fresh, new face – Ms Angela Marcel Thexeira, the new Programme Leader for the Keele University programme. That was double the reason to rejoice. The atmosphere was made livelier by the heady aroma of freshly brewed Starbucks coffee and an array of light snacks.

OHAYO! Japanese students feel right at home @ the Centre for English Language in KDU College Penang

Konnichiwa!! KDU College Penang recently welcomed 13 students from Japan who were on their inaugural visit to Penang on 28th March 2011 to participate in the KDU Holiday English Course. All thirteen of the students were housed with host families from different backgrounds and nationalities. The students came for two reasons: first, to explore Penang, a world heritage site, and to attend a three-day English Holiday course at KDU College.

To boost their language skills, the class started off with an ice-breaking session filled with games and fun-filled language activities to get to know their friends and the college. The session kicked off with “Action Pack”, a simple game using animal movements to identify every member of their group. The ice-breaker brought about good group dynamics, laughter and great fun! “Mingo” was the next activity and ‘Mingo’ created so much buzz that at the end of the activity, the Japanese students and facilitators not only got to know each other better but barriers and hostility among them were dissolved, and learning was ready to take place… From then, the Japanese students took learning English Language into their stride and were exposed to all four core components of the language i.e. speaking, listening, reading and writing through songs, newspapers, role-plays& more interactive games and activities.

KDU Power Chef Competition 2011 once again puts students to the test

For the past three years, the KDU Power Chef Competition has been a coveted event at KDU College Penang Campus. Modeled after prestigious Cooking Competitions from the likes of Iron Chef, The Chopping Board and the Battle of the Masters, this is the best opportunity for students to show off their flair for cooking and décor to stand above the rest.

This time, co-organised by the KDU Magnificent, Efficient Event Team who are final year students from the KDU-IMI Bachelor of Arts in International Hotel and Tourism Management, the competition generated its largest-ever number of participants from high schools all around Penang. A total of 132 students from 66 high schools participated in the day -ong activity which featured 3 high tempo rounds of culinary extravaganza before a winner was finally decided.

The format of the programme has also been revised from a two-day event to a one-day event to further test the participants' skills in time management as well as the ability to work under pressure. This format also gave opportunities for students to stay on and cheer for their favourite teams entering the final rounds.

The Guest of Honour for the event, YB Danny Law Heng Kiang, State Executive Councillor, addressed the crowd in his keynote speech, “I am pleased that the college has been a part of this platform that offer students opportunities to excel in the culinary industry by providing good training facilities to our future students as well as continuously expose the public especially the high school students to the culinary industry. Events such as this bring about lot of awareness towards the viabilitiy of the hospitality and culinary industry in Penang and Malaysia”.

This year’s final round participants also got the chance to use KDU’s new RM 1.2 million ‘Careme’ bakery and pastry kitchen to prepare their culinary work. Dr. Chong Beng Keok, Principal of KDU College, said: “The competition brings students together to share knowledge and skills; offering them the chance to garner tips and tools for creating a great meal. In addition, the Power Chef is held annually to foster camaraderie among culinary professionals and to spur interest of all in in the culinary arts and chef training.”

Many students showed enthusiasm and talent. They also took the opportunity to meet their peer culinarians as well as be judged by renowned judges who are industry experts . They were: Chef Peter Chan Weng Seng the Chairman of Chef Association Malaysia – Penang Chapter, Chef Amir Hamzah from Chef Association Malaysia – Penang Chapter, Chef Partiben Muniandy from Paradise Sandy Beach Resort, Albert Goh See Pheng from Unilever Food Solution, Chef Ismail Ibrahim from Sunway Hotel Seberang Jaya, Chef Abu Bakar Yusop from Gurney Hotel. Students were also graded on their work by famous food bloggers such as Mdm. Helen Ong, Mdm. Chan Li Lian and Mdm. CK Lam.

This year’s competition also added an extra dimension which promised to make it more popular than ever. The teams who didn’t make it to the finals did not go home empty handed. They were given a chance to try their hands at the Fruits and Vegetable Carving Contest which also offered fabulous gifts for winners. The crowd also enjoyed a very entertaining programme as there were performances by the Double IB Design students, a Mixology Demo as well as a few dance numbers by our talented students.

At the end of the day, the attention to detail by team Crème de la Creme from SMJK Perempuan Cina – Tham Jing Ting and Neoh Sze Ting bagged them the top prize which was RM800.00 cash with trophy and the prestigious KDU Power Chef Challenge Shield which will be displayed at their school for a year until the next challenge in year 2012. First runner up went to Penang Chinese Girls’ Private High School Lalawan Phianpirlyakul and Go Syan, who went home with RM500.00 cash and a trophy, while the second runner up went to SMK Datuk Haji Ahmad Badawi students, Raja Nuramalina Hanis bt. Raja Abdul Rahman and Nur Syafira Amira bt. Ibrahim who cuddled home a trophy each and RM300.00 cash. It was indeed a fabulous day for everyone.
