For the past three years, the KDU Power Chef Competition has been a coveted event at KDU College Penang Campus. Modeled after prestigious Cooking Competitions from the likes of I
ron Chef, The Chopping Board and the
Battle of the Masters, this is the best opportunity for students to show off their flair for cooking and décor to stand above the rest.
This time, co-organised by the KDU Magnificent, Efficient Event Team who are final year students from the KDU-IMI Bachelor of Arts in International Hotel and Tourism Management, the competition generated its largest-ever number of participants from high schools all around Penang. A total of 132 students from 66 high schools participated in the day -ong activity which featured 3 high tempo rounds of culinary extravaganza before a winner was finally decided.
The format of the programme has also been revised from a two-day event to a one-day event to further test the participants' skills in time management as well as the ability to work under pressure. This format also gave opportunities for students to stay on and cheer for their favourite teams entering the final rounds.
The Guest of Honour for the event, YB Danny Law Heng Kiang, State Executive Councillor, addressed the crowd in his keynote speech, “I am pleased that the college has been a part of this platform that offer students opportunities to excel in the culinary industry by providing good training facilities to our future students as well as continuously expose the public especially the high school students to the culinary industry. Events such as this bring about lot of awareness towards the viabilitiy of the hospitality and culinary industry in Penang and Malaysia”.
This year’s final round participants also got the chance to use KDU’s new RM 1.2 million ‘Careme’ bakery and pastry kitchen to prepare their culinary work. Dr. Chong Beng Keok, Principal of KDU College, said: “The competition brings students together to share knowledge and skills; offering them the chance to garner tips and tools for creating a great meal. In addition, the Power Chef is held annually to foster camaraderie among culinary professionals and to spur interest of all in in the culinary arts and chef training.”
Many students showed enthusiasm and talent. They also took the opportunity to meet their peer culinarians as well as be judged by renowned judges who are industry experts . They were: Chef Peter Chan Weng Seng the Chairman of Chef Association Malaysia – Penang Chapter, Chef Amir Hamzah from Chef Association Malaysia – Penang Chapter, Chef Partiben Muniandy from Paradise Sandy Beach Resort, Albert Goh See Pheng from Unilever Food Solution, Chef Ismail Ibrahim from Sunway Hotel Seberang Jaya, Chef Abu Bakar Yusop from Gurney Hotel. Students were also graded on their work by famous food bloggers such as Mdm. Helen Ong, Mdm. Chan Li Lian and Mdm. CK Lam.
This year’s competition also added an extra dimension which promised to make it more popular than ever. The teams who didn’t make it to the finals did not go home empty handed. They were given a chance to try their hands at the Fruits and Vegetable Carving Contest which also offered fabulous gifts for winners. The crowd also enjoyed a very entertaining programme as there were performances by the Double IB Design students, a Mixology Demo as well as a few dance numbers by our talented students.
At the end of the day, the attention to detail by team Crème de la Creme from SMJK Perempuan Cina – Tham Jing Ting and Neoh Sze Ting bagged them the top prize which was RM800.00 cash with trophy and the prestigious KDU Power Chef Challenge Shield which will be displayed at their school for a year until the next challenge in year 2012.
