Last of the C-Series Workshop - so be there!

KDU University College has, since March this year, conducted several workshops known as the C-Series workshops which focus on management, marketing, leadership and personal development. If you’ve not attended any of these workshops so far, you will have the opportunity to do so on October 18.

If you can’t make it, do request your team members or colleagues to attend. Two good reasons why you should not give it a miss - this will be the last of the C-Series, which was started with community-learning in mind.

Secondly, the speaker is Dr. Allen Teh, a professional trainer and consultant, who has kindly consented to conduct this training as part of his corporate social responsibility. At other times, you have to pay to listen to him speak. Just mark in your calendar the time: 2pm – 4.30pm on October 18.

Just RSVP today to: annteoh@kdu.edu.my

Assignments Made Fun!

When it comes to creativity, the Mass Communication students and lecturers always had a tick in their mind. Instead of classroom lectures, this time around, the KDU Mass Communication students and KDU UNICOM recently organized an event, in relation to their assignment. Their assignment scope was to watch and write a movie review. What blockbuster movie did these students got to watch? It is none other than the brilliant action comedy "Johnny English Reborn" starring the ever hilarious Mr. Rowan Atkinson (Main character of Mr.Bean).

The movie screening was held at GSC Signature, The Gardens on 15th September 2011. There were approximately 150 students and lecturers who were invited. To top it off, Lawrence Wong also made a special appearance on the event. Lawrence Wong has been in the media and entertainment industry for 10 years and we believe he can inspire and aspire students who wants to excel in the similar field.

Genting Hong Kong Limited Offers Internship Experience for KDU Undergrads

An internship gives undergraduates the hands-on experience which adds value to their resume. Employers find them more confident and more ready to settle down in their new careers. However, getting an internship would require the influence of their college or university with the industry players who are willing to engage the undergraduates for a short period of time, usually between 2 - 6 months.

The recent launch by Genting Hong Kong Limited with its inaugural "Genting Hong Kong Regional Internship Programme" is a result of the fine industry partnership it has with the KDU Education Group, as well as other educational institutes in China, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan. For the KDU Education Group, the launching ceremony was held on 8th September 2011, in Penang. It was officiated by Mr. William Ng (Chief Executive Officer – Cruise, GHK) and YBhg Datin Teh Geok Lian (Chief Executive Officer, the KDU Education Group).
This GHK-KDU partnership is an 8-week on-the-job programme at Star Cruises ships, Resorts World Manila or GHK's affiliate regional offices. YBhg Datin Teh said, "The KDU Education Group, being a pioneer in Malaysian private education, is pleased to be one of the selected top educational institutions for this internship programme. We look forward to other collaborations with GHK Hong Kong to provide life skills for our students."

This internship programme is GHK's on-going Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. As stated by Mr William Ng, "The Genting Group endeavours to ensure that today's youth will acquire a good education for a sustainable future through ardent support of various educational institutions. It gives the undergraduates the immersion experience at a leading leisure, entertainment and hospitality enterprise which will give them a leading edge to launch their future careers."

How the hunt works?

Seniors meet Juniors: An evening of togetherness

Written by Ida Lopez, Programme Leader, BA Econ Specialising in Accounting & Finance (1+2) The University of Manchester

KDU is proud to be associated with The University of Manchester in offering BA Econ (Hons) Degree specialising in Accounting & Finance. This is a 1+2 arrangement, where students complete their 1st. year at KDU and the remaining 2 years in Manchester.

All be together

One of the challenges of enrolling in a twinning programme is adapting to a new environment, in this case, to pursue the remaining two years of study in UK. In an effort to make the transition from KDU to Manchester easier, a get-together was held at Tony Roma’s at e@Curve on 22nd August 2011 at 6.30pm. The main objective of this event is to introduce the Year 1 students, who will be leaving to further their Second Year study at The University of Manchester, to the Year 2 students who were back for their semester break. This is the second time such a get-together is organized (the first being in 2010).

Flying to Manchester on a Maybank Scholarship

Written by: Ida Lopez, Lecturer, School of Business and Law

Jasmin Harjono completed KDU Diploma in Business Administration in March 2011. In August, she received the Maybank scholarship to pursue BA (Econ) at The University of Manchester, UK. She leaves for Manchester in September. She shares her thoughts on her experience at KDU University College and her aspirations for the future.

1. What was your experience studying the diploma program in KDU?
I entered KDU just in time for the business students to attend their classes in the new campus in Section 13. After a week of going to classes, I've made wonderful friends that I will cherish forever. My experience in KDU, socially, was not a problem. Students in KDU are all friendly people. My new friends were not all students, but lecturers too. Here in KDU, the lecturers will go the distance to help you, not just regarding your studies but also in life. I thank all my lecturers for “waking me up” to put more effort in my studies. I do not and will never regret my time in KDU!

2. Why did you choose to study in the UK, particularly in The University of Manchester?
The United Kingdom is a fully developed country and it is known for their quality of education. The Malaysian education system is still based on the UK system. Hence, I feel I will be able to adapt well in UK. Moreover, my mother has lived in the UK before and she would love me to experience what she had experienced. I chose The University of Manchester as it is indeed a reputable university.

3. Why did you select to major in Economics and Finance?
I am interested in the game of numbers, but not to spend my life doing Mathematics or Accounting. I would love something more challenging, realistic and intricate. When I first did my Economics subject at diploma level, I fell in love with it immediately. I was and still am curious about things intangible. Economics sort of gave me an avenue to solve mysteries. As competition in the industry becomes more demanding, I decided to choose Finance as the Second Major, which adds value to my curriculum vitae

4. What was your experience in applying for the Maybank Scholarship?
The process of applying for a scholarship was not easy and it was definitely intense. Despite many unsuccessful scholarship applications, I was determined never to give up. Finally, Maybank agreed to sponsor my future studies in UK. My advice to students who are looking for scholarships (trust me), is: do not give up; always appear strong and sophisticated, and make sure to do a lot of research about sponsors. They also are looking for star quality, one of which is your critical thinking skill, which is incredibly important.

5. How did you feel after getting the scholarship?
After getting that phone call announcing that I got the scholarship, I feel so grateful and I am still on cloud 9! I just couldn't believe that I have finally seen the fruit of my labour. I guess that is why it is not easy to get a scholarship, because after you manage to obtain one, the satisfaction is pure happiness!

6. How do you see yourself in 5-10 years time?
In 5-10 years, hopefully I will still be serving Maybank. I may have settled down with a family, but I will continue to focus on building my career. In 10 years, I think I will be fully capable to give back to society and truly be serving my country.

There's something lurking in the Dark....

Rising to the University College challenge

Written by Mr Loh Teck Hua, Lecturer, School of Business and Law.

With the official inauguration of KDU College to University College status in October 2010, exciting plans have been put in place to further upgrade its standing as a prestigious institution of quality higher education. One of these is the change management project which involves every faculty in the organization and, without exception, the School of Business and Law.

What does this ‘change management’ mean to the ordinary person on the street, especially to students and their parents?

First of all, new management vision and mission are in place to drive business growth and educational excellence. If one was to look from our students’ point of view, that would mean providing a cutting-edge learning experience, innovative teaching methods and upgrading the organization’s expertise through research - all with the objective of preparing them well to meet the challenges of a diverse and globally competitive workforce.

Excel through KDU-Manchester BA (Econ) Twinning Programme

Congratulations! (From left: Lim Yin Wen & Lim Yee Ping)

The University of Manchester is a well known and prestigious University that has a remarkable track record of producing over 23 Nobel Prize Laureates. Recently, Lim Yin Wen and Lim Yee Ping from KDU University College (2008/9 Year 1 Cohort) were awarded First Class Honours Bachelor of Arts in Economic and Social Studies from the University of Manchester.

Their plans after this?
Yee Ping decides to pursue her Master Degree study in The London School of Ecnonomics and Political Science whereas Yin Wen will be looking forward to her career soon.

In 2010, another two KDU-Manchester students also received First Class Honours Degree in BA (Econ).
This twinning arrangement, a 1+2 programme, allows students to complete their first year of studies at KDU University College and the remaining two years in The University of Manchester. Apart from the significant cost savings, students stand to gain not one, but two tertiary experiences in the culturally diverse and student-dominated cities of Kuala Lumpur and Manchester.
There is only one intake each year. This year, the intake commences on 26th September and the registration is now ongoing.

*Shall there be further enquiries on how you could get on the same track to the KDU-Manchester Twinning Programme, do call our General line at (03-79536688) or email us at (best@kdu.edu.my). You may also want to take a look at our Website (www.kdu.edu.my) or add us up on (Facebook) !

Congratulations to Lim Yee Ping and Lim Yin Wen!
