My mother, the Encourager.

By Kh’ng Weng Shan, Student, KDU Foundation 609, Centre for Pre-University Studies

I believe that in this world there is surely one person who inspires you. That person could be your parents, your friends or your teachers. For me, the person who inspires me much is my mother.

I must admit that while I was studying in Form 5, I had not endeavoured to put much effort in my studies although my mum had always encouraged me to do so. I would leave exam revision to the very last minute despite my mum’s pleas to prepare for my exams.

My favourite subject was Math for which I had always scored a distinction. One day, while in Form 5, my score for Additional Math paper was a mere 55%. I was so shocked when I received my results although I was very sure I was mentally-prepared for it. This was the first time I had ever cried over my poor results.

With such disappointing results, I was expecting a good ticking off from my mum, but to my surprise, she comforted me and told me not to despair. She told me to revise constantly and not to do “last-minute work”. Her loving attitude and encouraging words inspired me to work harder in preparation for the next exam.

It suddenly dawned on me how badly I had treated my mum all this while. I had ignored her concerns, and yet, she still thought positively of me. I then decided that I won’t let her down again, and I would strive to do better.

My attitude has changed since then. I began to take more interest in my studies, asking help whenever I needed it. Finally, I began to excel in my studies with good results to show. I surprised my teacher and my friends. My mum, who is such an encourager, bought me a lovely necklace as a reward. .

Now, as I continue with my studies at KDU College in Petaling Jaya, I would ring her everyday to share about my progress with my studies and the friends I have. She continues to give her advice and to support me when I am stressed over assignments or presentation work. I really want to thank my mum and say to her, “Mum, I appreciate you lots. I love you, and thank you for your support and love.”
