Nerf War @ KDU DJ campus!


The Nerf war was a friendly game for both genders :)
Normally a serious institution of higher education, the 15th of December saw KDU University College (KDU UC)’s main auditorium become a battlefield as university college students teamed up with the members of the Nerf Damansara for a day of NERF war games. The game was open to both members of Nerf Damansara as well as KDU Students with about thirty people playing, with almost a third of the participants being students of KDU UC who were there for a variety of reasons, ranging from curiosity to those just looking to blow off some steam having just finished their end of year exams.

24th September 2012, Three Students of KDU University College (KDU UC) accompanied by their lecturer Ms. Chris Ong Siew Har, Senior Lecturer of the School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts (SHTCA) left for Taipei to attend the 2012 Taiwan Exhibition and Convention Industry Show under the sponsorship of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA).

STEPS

1. Cut out the Papercraft Mascot in the KDU Game DevelopmentBrochure and give our Mascot a face and identity based on your creativity! Also give him a name that suits his personality.
2. Find an interesting location and snap a picture of the Mascot in a way the befits his environment. Go free and wild on how and where the picture is taken. You could even give him a scenario to act out!
3. Head on over to KDU’s Official Facebook Page and LIKE our page HERE. This is required to be eligible.
4. Each participant may submit ONE photo (High-Resolution JPEG or PNG) to contest@kdu.edu.my along with the following details, your name, IC Number, Age, Contact Details (Phone-number/ Email / Facebook Link) and of course your Mascot’s name. The email subject title should begin with ‘KDU Mascot Contest’
5. The pictures will then be uploaded in an album on the official KDU Facebook site in an album called Papercraft Mascot Photo Contest.
6. Get your friends to LIKE your mascot by sharing, yelling, coercing, using any means necessary.
7. The most LIKES will contribute to 50% of your score while the other 50% will be decided by a panel of judges.
8. Participants will be contacted via phone/email or through Facebook to collect their prizes at the KDU Damansara Jaya Campus
(remember to bring your IC!)

1. Open to Malaysians aged 17- 20. Proof of identity and age may be required. Use of a false name or address will result in disqualification. Existing students, staff and direct members of the KDU are not eligible.

3. The KDU Papercraft Mascot needs to be part of the photo. No indecent/ violent/explicit contents of photos submitted.
4. Only one (1) submission per participant (Extra submissions will not be entertained).

6. All entries must be received by KDU by the specific closing date. Late submissions will not be entertained.

Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards 2012!

Our students from the KDU UC School of Pre-University studies managed to grab hold of the Cambridge Learner Awards for June 2012 examinations. Once again, without fail, they made a name out there, achieving great awards and achievements. The ceremony took place at the Armada Hotel, Petaling Jaya on 22nd November 2012.

Once again, the Western Australian Certificate of Education (AUSMAT) students of KDU University College puts a smile on all of our faces. Pre-University studies here in KDU University College is one of a kind. The lecturers caters towards the need of the students, ensuring them to excel in both life and studies, becoming successful individuals. The students have made us proud throughout the years and often achieve outstanding awards. This time around, the WACE (AUSMAT) Certificate Presentation Ceremony of 2012 took place at KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus on 21st November.

Universal Children's Day with KDU University College!

In life, not many are born lucky, or living the expected life. However, things can change if we, the society, do something about it and take action on what needs to be done in order to create change.
This time around. the Diploma in Mass Communications students of KDU University College’s School of Communication and Creative Arts took the initiative to organized a fund-raising campaign campaign for different NGOs and charitable organisations that work towards the benefit of children aged 18 years old and below.
The event took place at Publika, Solaris Dutamas on 11th November 2012.

Congratulations to KDU chef lecturers to receive the Master Chef Certification!


A hearty, big fat congratulations to the recipients of the Master Chef Certification! The successful collaboration between KDU University College's School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts and ALMA La Scuola Internazionale di Cucina Italiana, Colorno, Italia made their mark here at KDU University College. The collaboration started with the Master Chef Certification in Teaching and Learning with 9 chefs from SHTCA, PJ campus, 2 from SHTCA Penang campus, and Mr.Ricky Parlanti from the Clearwater Golf Sanctuary in Ipoh, also the SHTCA Board of Advisors. This course is of course, to enhance the skills and practises of our chef lecturers within a 9 months programme whereby the lecturers had to go through theory and practical classes. This inculcates the best practises on the teaching and learning process. The certification ceremony took place at KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus on 6th November 2012. Congratulations to all graduating Master Chef!

Help-Portait by ALSA (Asian Law Student Association)


On the 29th of September 2012, the students of Asian Law Student Association (ALSA) KDU University College organised a project called the "Help-Portrait". Based on the United States, it is a movement by photographers who use their time, equipment and expertise to give back to those who are less fortunate. In order to show support for the movement, ALSA KDU set up a photography station to give the less fortunate families the ability to get high quality professional photos done of their families and walk out with a print photos for free.

CIMB EcoSave Green Kitchen Challenge- Finals!

The CIMB Green Kitchen Challenge happened last Saturday saw 10 secondary school finalists  taking centre stage in a cooking competition. The CIMB EcoSave Green Kitchen Challenge, a corporate social responsibility initiative was organized by CIMB Islamic with the support of Pusat Sumber Alam Sekitar and KDU University College. The event was held in KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus on  20th  October 2012. The intention of this challenge were to educate students on simple ways and methods to minimize solid waste and promote long-term sustainable benefits to the environment. 
Each school team had a mentor to supervise and guide them.

Swiss Culinary Competition!


The Swiss week is back! The Embassy of of Switzerland together with KDU University College's School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts whipped out a culinary competition on 8th October 2012. This gives the students the chance to showcase their culinary skills and talent, thus, exposing them to the real-life challenge in preparing a starter or soup, followed by a main course with a Swiss element to ,meet the  internationally recognized standards of the culinary industry.

Be Hip! Go Bald for Cancer!



A total of 33 individuals comprising both lecturers and students from various countries went bald for cancer in aid of the Home of Hope at the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM). The fundraising campaign was carried out by students enrolled in the Corporate Social Responsibility module at the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (SHTCA) at KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus on 10th October 2012.

Power Chef Teacher's Edition 2012!


You have probably heard of the Power Chef Competition, organized annually by KDU and KDU School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts. However, the competition is organized for secondary school students. This time around,  a new twist is in. The Power Chef Competition took on a whole new level and organized the Power Chef Competition Teacher's Edition! This is Malaysia's fist ever Culinary competition for school teachers, as well as KDU's very first time organizing this. The competition took place at KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus on 29th September 2012.

An interview with KDU student, Jonathan Lim!

So, what has Jonathan Lim achieved so far during his internship period? He is now interning in the kitchen department at Hotel President Wilson (Starwood's Luxury Collection), Geneva Switzerland. We had the chance to have an interview with him and this will be a very interesting read especially to students who will be interested in the culinary field and have a passion for food as well as realizing this dream into a possible career. 
Let's take Jonathan Lim as a great example to KDU as he shares his experience in Geneva, Switzerland and how he copes in his work as well as taking the opportunity to participate in competitions. He was a student of KDU University College from March 2010 to May 2011 studying Diploma in Culinary Arts (Batch CULA 10) and later on continued on to Higher Diploma in European Culinary Management from June 2011 to December 2011.

Are you under ATTACK?

Most of us are not aware of the threats that are lurking in our computers. Well, of course most of the IT or tech-savvy group will be known to it. This time around, the KDU School of Computing and Creative Media organized a workshop called "Are you Under Attack?" on 11th September 2012 at KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus. So, what went down?

"Cyber bullying shows us cases that could lead to death. We must always be careful and take extra precaution on the type of information we are giving out or posting, especially posts like location. The magnitude of cyber crime could be up to 1million victims of fraud per day. We need to play our part to curb cyber crime as this could protect our lives as well as our families, or loved ones. 92.6% of cyber bullying happens on the Facebook platform and it can come in various forms," explained Philip.

Back 2 Street Ruled KDU University College!


KDU UC’s Auditorium in its Damansara Jaya campus was turned into an amazing dance hall for some cool street dance and singing performances on 30th August 2012 from 7pm onwards.  Back 2 Street was the name of the event, organized by PARTS (KDU UC’s Performing Arts Club) and PR Club (KDU UC’s Public Relations Club).
Before the show started, audiences were treated to a sumptuous buffet of Indian dishes. Served on the buffet line was biryani rice and some authentic spicy chicken and meat dishes and vegetables. The audience relaxed and chilled in anticipation for the highlight of the night – the much awaited performances!

In line with its mission of sharing its success with stakeholders and the community it serves, KDU University College is proud to announce its collaboration with ECM Libra Foundation in providing financial assistance to needy students from across the ASEAN region through the Joint ECM Libra Foundation KDU University College ASEAN Scholarship.

KDU UC Excellence Award Ceremony 2012!


                 
Talk about achievements, the students of KDU Pre-University Studies tops the chart! Once again, every year round, the students of KDU School of Pre-University Studies achieves outstanding results. Another round of the KDU UC Excellence Award Ceremony took place at KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus on 17th August 2012. This time around, it was the Cambridge International Examinations General Certificate of Education - Advanced Level (CIE GCE A Level) of May/June 2012 Examinations.

Ramadhan Orphans Project 2012!



First of all, we from KDU University College, would like to congratulate the Events Operations and MICE students from SHTCA (School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts)! Purpose? They have successfully raised RM 6092.85 from all their hard work, tears and sweat. The collected sum will be donated towards the orphans and and single mothers of Rumah Baitul Amal Kasih, Bukit Rahman Putra. Hampers and "Duit Raya" (Green packet) was also given  to home during a "Buka Puasa" dinner. Good job done by the CULA 4 students as well, taking charge of the food and Culinary service together with their lecturers.


To add icing on the cake, they were also treated to a shopping spree at Carrefour, Tropicana City Mall. Each of them were given RM 120 to buy Raya clothes and accessories. The remaining collection was divided equally among them as additional "Duit Raya".

Soap Making workshop!

The Zakka workshop has been successful and gain interest especially to hobbyist. This time around, the Zakka Workshop series concluded last Saturday with soap making session to a full house of 50 participants.

Organized by the School of Communication and Creative Arts, this third and final workshop was conducted by local renowned soap making expert Puuuv Soap which was founded by an entrepreneurial couple.

Infographics Exhibition 2012- MALAYSIAku


In conjunction with the 55th Merdeka Day, students from KDU UC will be putting up an INFOGRAPHICS Exhibition. Come let's all celebrate as Malaysia gained independence for the nation. The showcase is curated by Ms.Pouline (Comm & Creative Arts Lecturer) with the support from KDU's School of Communication & Creative Arts.

The exhibition will feature a range of infographic design by 57 Desktop Publishing (DTP) students from the Diploma in Mass Communication programme with the intention to use their newly acquired knowledge and skill to remind their friends and the public the history of Malaysia and the development the country has accomplished over the last 55 years.

Jayson Puah in Paper Crane, the musical at KLPAC!


With the introduction of the diploma of entertainment arts in April 2012, one of our five students Jayson Puah has landed himself a ensemble role in the musical opening tomorrow (27 July 2012) at Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts (KLPAC). 
For we hope that entertainment arts students will get themselves into the pulse of the local performing arts scene in Malaysia.

The Turtle Project!


The Corporate Social Responsibility class is back again with yet another cause! This semester, the students from CSR class of April 2012 consisting of Mass Communication & Games Design Degree students have joined together in a fundraising event in the name of turtles, with the support of Juara Turtle Project (JTP). You can find more information about the Juara Turtle Project HERE.
The Turtle Project has raised a sum of RM 3,300 and will be contributed towards the Juara Turtle Project. JTP is a non-governmental organization that aims to preserve sea turtles one egg at a time on the coast of Kampung Juara on Pulau Tioman. The fundraiser event was held between 16th to 17th July 2012 at KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus.

Theatre Talk by Industry Professionals!


The theatre scene in Malaysia is definitely growing strong and steady. On 18th July 2012, three distinguished guests from the Malaysian theatre scene arrived at KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus. These guests were Dato’ Faridah Merican, Mark Beau de Silva and Christopher Ling, from KLPAC (The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre).
Dato’ Faridah Merican is the Co-founder and executive producer of The Actors Studio Malaysia and The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC). She is often referred to as the First Lady of Theatre in Malaysia and has been awarded the BOH Cameronian Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to the performing arts in Malaysia. Her talk was titled “The Business of Theatre, Now and Then”.

Inter- School Dance Competition 2012!

Dance, is a passion. Some, refer dance as a form of art, some as a favourite past time, and to some, it is merely a raw passion. The best time to unleash one's passion is by starting young. This time around, secondary school students got the opportunity to unleash their talent and passion for dancing. The KDU School of Pre-University Studies organized the annual Inter-School Dance competition. However, the theme this year was "1 Malaysia". Students had to prepare their dance and choreography, incorporating the theme of 1 Malaysia. The event took place at our usual hot-spot, the KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus's Auditorium on 12th July 2012.

Zakka Workshop- Design Your Own Bag!

The second Zakka workshop has arrived in its own unique form. This time around, participants were taught how to design their own personalized bag! The event took place at KDU University College, Damansara Jaya campus on 14th July 2012, to a room full of bag design enthusiast.

Organized by the School of Communication and Creative Arts, the workshop was conducted by self-taught local renowned zakka maker Florence Lui who has been producing handmade bags since 1990s.
According to Florence, entrepreneurial makers should create products that not only look good but also functional and useful.
