Minggu Kebudayaan Melayu 2011

Written by
Chan Wai Yee, MKM Secretary (A-Level Arts Student)

MKM is back in KDU University College! Rallying the torch of eight years of impeccable college tradition, it was to come to spirit within the walls of KDU University College; a cultural rendezvous. The rhapsody was summoned in a single file labelled as the Minggu Kebudayaan Melayu (MKM), taking flight on the third week of July 2011. The climax of these series of esteemed events was symphonised in a Charity Gala Dinner dubbed Malam Kebudayaan Melayu which speaks in tune of Evolusi-Merentasi Zaman as its theme. It highlights the transition of the Malay culture in Malaysia.

Our country’s well-known poet and novelist, Datuk A. Samad Said, who officiated and granted patronage towards this event on 18th of July 2011, also launched the book, ‘Tok Kenali’ written by our very own lecturer, Cik Nor Hayati Bt Redzwan.

The one week of event kick-started with an inter-school Traditional and Folk Dance competition triumphed by SMK (P) Methodist, Klang. Next in the list was the inter-school Choral Speaking competition, which was bagged by SMK Convent Sentul. On the third and fourth day, we had our very own cultural bazaar at the KDU Concourse area, followed by a fashion fast forward of its own on traditional outfits on the eve of the Gala Dinner.

Finally, the night of 23rd July 2011- a date many would remember. Highlights of the night were the traditional dances (Tarian Lilin, Zapin Haruman, Joget), Puisidra (the combination of both puisi and drama)and the re-enactment of scenes from P. Ramlee’s drama (Pendekar Bujang Lapuk, Anakku Sazeli, Tiga Abdul, Nujum Pak Belalang). The first-ever Choral Reading in Bahasa Malaysia was showcased on the night which distinguished the difference between the culture of yesteryears, and the modern culture (well marinated with youthful humour) and the jaw-dropping Evolution Dance performance which showed the evolution of the dances from the 1960s’ (twist, pop yeh yeh, disco, dandut) to the modern era (pop and hip hop). The night was definitely a total eclipse of the absolute norms!

It was definitely not an easy breeze coming up with choreography for the dances nor were there nights we slept through without having the slightest tinge of MKM in our very dreams. These were priceless moments. The moments we shared together working off the clock to get the backdrops done while being nocturnal during the wee hours rehearsing the very same steps and lines.

We argued and cried but we laughed even louder, together. There were sombre moments in the annals of MKM 2011, but we were lucky to at least have one another at the break of the dawn till the last shed of twilight on the night of 23rd July. Regardless of how raucous the applauses were from the crowd that night or the arguments that we had among each other; the magic lies within every individual whom had put the pixels and parcels of MKM 2011. No regrets, only tales and memories to be told of the yesterdays.

Our heartiest shout out to Miss Sathyavathy, Miss Hema Madhavan, Mr Jaya Kumar, Mr. Hilman Oo, Cik Nurul, Ms. Shida, Ms Hanaa, Cik Hasmiza, Ms Shin Yee, Encik Falliq and of course, our working Patron, Datin Lily Zaiton, aka "Mama" to us. Words simply could not do enough. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for you have truly been an inspiration to all of us. Special thanks to Dayat, Boy and also Eddy (Artistic Director) for all the guidance and help that was given throughout the whole MKM 2011. We wouldn’t be able to pull off such a grand cultural event without their advice and contribution.

MKM 2011 was definitely a success and a memorable event for the School of Pre-University Studies. Until we meet again in MKM next year... cheers!
