“Be the best, beat the rest”, that is what we should always tell ourselves when we are doing something in life. At KDU, we always inspire our people with the smartest way of doing things, compassion, solidarity, and high drive towards the process of achieving the objectives. It is only natural that KDU produces excellent scholars, graduates, and even employees. On the 17 November 2016, two of our International A Level Students have received the prestigious Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards, Malaysia, namely Hooi Wei Cheng for Mathematics - Top in the World and Wong Sook Wei for History – Top in the World, at the presentation ceremony recently held at the Armada Hotel.

One thing you ought to know about The Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards, convened by the Cambridge International Examinations is, it acknowledges the best Cambridge learners in Malaysia and around the world who did extraordinarily well in the Cambridge examinations. The results achieved in the June 2016 examinations series by the two KDU Cambridge International A Levels students were compared against more than one million students in more than 10, 000 schools in countries around the globe, including United Kingdom, United States, China, India, and Singapore, as well as throughout Europe, South America, and Middle East. With all that in mind, this award does not come as easy, it requires a whole new level of dedication, commitment, hardships, and even struggles in order to achieve such standards. We share the achievements together with our students and felt super glad that they do realise our presence and support throughout their preparations for such challenge.

We would like to congratulate our students for making us proud and more importantly for them to be proud KDU-ian wherever they go in pursuit of their dreams. We will continue our campaign in producing top notch, excellent, crème de le crème and bombastic students that would outshine others in the competitive scene and perform extremely well in the working industry. As we emulate the proud achievements of our fellow students, we should always embrace the idea of “Hit the ground running” and be prepared to face all the challenges that life might throw at us.

Grant Awards Presentation by Canon Malaysia to KDU University College students

We often associate smart collaboration as “I scratch your back and you scratch mine” kind of a thing. However, this time around KDU has stepped up the game by partaking in a collaboration with Canon Malaysia to provide better education opportunity for the deserving students who are more than motivated to chase their dreams and continue their study here at KDU.

We call the scholarship fund, the Canon Seeding Fund Financial Support which was given to four students namely, Ho Chee Yin, Bachelor of Communication (Hons); Sarah Claire – Marie Atkinson, Diploma in Culinary Arts; Teh Siew Chin, Bachelor of Business (Hons) with Law; and Viona Lim, Bachelor of Communication (Hons).

On top of the award presentation, students were given the opportunity to participate in a sharing session with the Director of Human Resources Division, Ms. Julia Cheah who talked about the challenges in the working industry nowadays. She encouraged all students to be relentless in an effort to keep improving themselves and lay the foundation for even greater achievements in the future. The inspiration imparted to the students were enough to fuel them even further to strive hard in their studies in order to secure a better future for themselves.

At the end of the day, it was not only the recipients who got the encouragement from the event, it was for everyone to fully experience the real world challenges and become more eager to make the necessary preparations. All in all, the event proved to be a good experience for the students, with both KDU and Canon looking forward to more collaborative ventures in the future.

KDU Students Hungry for More After Winning MAPCU APU & MASISWA- TAYLOR'S Taekwondo Championship 2016

KDU Taekwondo Team in Masiswa - Taylor’s Taekwondo Championship 2016

In this entry, we will take a look at KDU’s Taekwondo team that has managed to fight their way to victory in both MAPCU APU Taekwondo Championship on 23 October and Masiswa-Taylor’s Taekwondo Championship on 4 - 5 November 2016 respectively.

A total of 6 participants were prepared to compete for the championship titles of which 5 of them were in the Kyorugi category whereas the other 1 participated in Poomsae category. The 5 participants who took part in both MAPCU and Masiswa tournaments – Kyorugi category are Selina Tang Ling Ser, Cindy Tee Hui Yee, Jason Lee Cheng Yi, Adrian Ang Eee Shen, and Chong Min Ler. On the other hand, the only KDU representative for the Poomsae category is Wong Xin Hui who competed in both MAPCU and Masiswa championships as well. It was astonishing to see these fighters so well prepared while at the same time studying as a full time students here at KDU.

Words just can’t describe how proud and happy we were as the team managed to brought back several medals such as a gold medal by Selina Tang Ling Ser, a silver medal by Chong Min Ler, and a bronze medal by Cindy Tee Hui Yee successfully in the MAPCU APU Competition including a gold medal by Selina Tang Ling Ser and a bronze by Cindy Tee Hui Yee in the Masiswa-Taylor’s Taekwondo Championship 2016. All these plausible achievements have not came in easy as they have to go through many obstacles including an injury suffered by one of KDU’s representatives Jason Lee Cheng Yi during the the Masiswa-Taylor’s Taekwondo Championship event.

Regardless of their spectacular performances in both MAPCU APU Taekwondo Championship and Masiswa-Taylor’s Taekwondo Championship, the team still hopes that they could bring more good results and produce more talented players in taekwondo by increasing the number of members in the club. More than winning the championship titles, the taekwondo club has successfully increased the morale of all the existing members and looking forward to achieve more in the near future.

From left to right: KDU SCCM students Haw Jing Hann, Wahid Dawood and Roger Ng Khang Shen, posing with their proud achievement.

It is like “killing two birds with one stone” for a graduating trio of Bachelor of Game Development (Hons) from KDU University College as they are just one day away from celebrating their official graduation ceremony on the 22 October 2016 when they received the exciting news of them winning the MSC- APICTA 2016’s Best of Tertiary Student Category – Creative Multimedia prize for their First Person Co-Op Shooter Game called Combat Infiltration Droid (C.I.D). The three graduating students namely, Roger Ng Khang Shen, Haw Jing Hann, and Wahid Dawod Mohammed Hamid, have managed to achieve such an astounding award with their remarkable effort in designing such an interactive game with sophisticated design to win the hearts of the juries in their recent competition.

The MSC- APICTA Awards are initiated by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) together with The National ICT Association of Malaysia (PIKOM) and have received the patronage of the Prime Minister since its inception in 1999. With aims to recognise outstanding achievements of those who have contributed to the development of Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) Malaysia for the benefit of the country, it acknowledges creativity, innovation, and excellence in Malaysian ICT.
The competition extended to individuals, students, entrepreneurs, SMEs and organisations who are involved in creative media from all across Malaysia.

Ng, Haw, and Wahid teamed up and named themselves ‘C3’ during their final year project, as they started to develop the game together since a few months back, at KDU’s School of Computing and Creative Media (SCCM). Strongly encouraged by their lecturers, the trio handed the application for this contest in September.

In its working mechanism, Combat Infiltration Droid (C.I.D) was developed using the Unreal Engine 4 by the trio. It requires players to be tactical whilst exploring famous local places around Kuala Lumpur and sampling visual bits of Malaysian culture. At the contest, it was presented by Ng to the judges.

Their recent achievement have not only proven their capability in designing the best game, but more importantly has made KDU proud by proving to the world that KDU provides one of the best real world academic trainings for the students.

Iron Chef Thailand Winner, Chef Tom Halpin, Shares Experience with Budding Future Chefs at KDU University Colleg

Halpin sharing his experience with KDU’s culinary students

What better source of knowledge, experience, or information that we could get than from the master, guru, or the expert themselves. In this entry, we will take a peep at the sharing session with Chef Tom Halpin, an ex sous chef at Denmark’s two Michelin-starred, Noma and the winner of 2015 Iron Chef Thailand which was hosted by KDU University College at the Utropolis Glenmarie campus for our culinary students.

Halpin was in Malaysia for a collaboration with Chef Darren Teoh, executive chef of KDU’s own modern Malaysian fine dining restaurant Dewakan, on a dinner series featuring his exclusive interpretation of our Malaysian herbs and produce, held from 20 to 22 October.
We utilised the opportunity to arrange for a special sharing session with the celebrity chef to impart his wealth of experience in the culinary industry with the students who are eager to learn more from his previous endeavour.

The evening transpired into a rich and colourful session for the students as they managed to throw important questions such as the source of inspiration, best recipe and ingredients, best produce in cooking and many more. This sort of exposure is extremely useful for the culinary students to further pursue their dreams in the ever challenging industry that they will soon delve into as soon as they graduate. It provided them with a first-hand experience from such an iconic personality such as Halpin who made his way through in the culinary industry and became successful.

In conclusion, the students were very satisfied with the kind of opportunity given to them to attain knowledge and get to mingle with one of the best chefs in the world. When asked if they were looking forward to attend such occasion again, they replied with open arms and hope to get such rare opportunity again in the near future. It was a remarkable evening that the students had with the Iron Chef and they had a lot of fun while taking a step closer towards their dream goals, to be the best chefs in the world.

Hard work pays off for those who strive in chasing their dreams and objectives in life. The result that we get from our effort and strong determination is the reward that we get in return of the hardships that we endured. This rang true for our national athletes that took part in the Rio Paralympic 2016 when they brought back three golds and a bronze medal which made Malaysian proud. KDU University College acknowledges the achievements of our para-athletes and announced the first scholarship fund for the Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC), at the KDU Fitspiration Day held on 13 October at the institution’s Utropolis Glenmarie Campus.

The KDU Fitspiration Scholarship fund, which amounted to RM500,000, is to recognise the hard work and effort of all the Malaysian para-athletes. This scholarship is in line with the with KDU’s aim to provide quality tertiary education for the para-athletes without jeopardising their utmost potential to excel both in sports and academic. It is also an athlete-led development programme whereby a network of support services and expertise are tailored to the individual needs of the athlete. The programme grades support depending on the athlete’s achievement, potential, & need with the objective of remaining flexible to support diverse needs of the athlete. The scholarship is not only opened to Malaysian para-athletes, but also to para-athletes from South East Asia representing their countries in sporting events.

Their appearance drew KDU students into great excitement cheering for their national heroes. They are regarded as our national heroes and received thunderous applause from the crowd as they made their entrance.
