KDU Law Students Launch e-newsletter

The Tabula Rasa website

You could see it all in their eyes: passion, excitement, eagerness.... these young undergrads of the Oxford-Brookes University LLB programme couldn't wait to start the launch of their e-newsletter named TABULA RASA (http://tabularasa.kdu.edu.my/), on 2 June 2010, at KDU's Section 13 campus.

Some members of the team with Ms Sabah Carrim (centre) - eager to start the launch

The brainchild of their lecturer, Ms Sabah Carrim, this e-newsletter took off with a modest team of five members who persuaded some of their law lecturers to contribute articles, and they did, very passionately. Soon, they managed to garner some enthusiastic writers from among their peers who organised interviews and wrote the promotional leaflets to build awareness of this launch.

Other colleagues like Mr Darren How, Sr Multimedia Engineer, gave a helping hand in constructing the website. Dobby, as he is favourably known among his peers, is a member of this editorial committee and also dons the hat of Tabula Rasa website manager. "I'm lucky to have IT-savvy parents and so, building and maintaining the website comes to me naturally."

At this launch, the introduction of the various sections of the e-newsletter were uniquely introduced by some of the Editorial Board committee members who were seated with the audience. They sprang up from their seats holding placards that read: Voices of Passion, Law in Practice, Lifestyle, Reviews in Music, Literature (short stories and poems), Fashion, Hot Seat (interviews), Events.... "and of course, there's the Editorial Page," interjected Najwa Amira, the assistant editor-in-chief and emcee for the day. "All thanks to our great team whose aims are to encourage students to read and do their part for the community. It also allows the students and lecturers a space to promote empathy and understanding in discourse." The core team members are: Adrian Teo, Dobby Chew Chuan Yang, Najwa Amira, Nicole Eng Bei Inn, Ridzwan, Aminath Haifa, Chishiba Kalala, Ruvimbo, Amy Hiew and Diana Ong.

Ms Sabah Carrim expressed her hope that with everyone's participation this e-newsletter would continue to be sustained. She thanked Dr. Tan, KDU's Deputy Principal who has ensured that it would be linked to the KDU website; Ms Quah who has always given clear, specific instructions for the successful implementation of projects, as well as lecturers and students who would be contributing to the vibrant and constructive discussions. "The goal, she said, "is to wipe out prejudices and to allow us to look at the world from new perspectives. The target audience is everyone as it has an international appeal."

An impressive slide presentation showed the eight different sections of the newsletter which holds the promise of entertaining news, an exchange of constructive view points, heart-stirring stories and touching poems. It is truly living by its name, Tabula Rasa, which means "a blank slate" in Latin. We could all fill in these blank slates with our perceptions, thoughts, knowledge, ideas - these will help shape our experiences and enrich our lives.

A lot of smiles and merriment at the launch - it heralds a great future
for Tabula Rasa
