Pursuing A Dream

Kim Jong Bum who is enrolled in the Certificate in Intensive English course is not your ordinary student. He's an energetic father of two who passionately pursues his interest in golf while attending English lessons.

How long have you been in Malaysia?
I have been living here since September 2009. I joined the Certificate in Intensive English course in KDU in April 2010.

Why did you choose to come to Malaysia?
At first, I thought of living in New Zealand with my children who are studying there. However, my wife and I were afraid that they may become too dependent on us; therefore we decided to reside in Malaysia instead. My children are still in New Zealand and my wife's cousin is taking care of them. I'm glad we chose Malaysia because it is a good place to play golf compared to other countries. The golfing fees are much more affordable. Another factor is accessibility since there are quite a few golf courses around the PJ area.

What are your interests?
I used to be crazy over snow skiing and water skiing. But I fell in love with golf ever since I started playing the game in my late thirties. It used to be a necessity for my job but now it is my passion. I love it so much that I got a certificate in teaching professional golf. I usually play golf 3 or 4 times a week with my friends.

Tell us about your experience studying in KDU.
I'm having a great time learning English here. What I like most is that I get to practice speaking in English with friends from different countries. Besides that, I can learn about their cultures. The most memorable time that I've had was the drama competition and the trip to Penang. I've also met a few friends in the course who like to play golf and I'm glad to be able to give them some coaching after classes are over.

What are your plans for the future?
I want to be a famous golf instructor in the world. Therefore, I would like to study more in this area. Someday, I hope to go to Australia to take up a course in golf instruction as I've yet to find any such course in Malaysia.
