MDEC Basic Project Management

The Business Department of KDU University College together with Global Knowledge Network recently organized a basic project management training that is open for all students within the Business Department that would be completing their studies. The training was offered as an initiative under the MSC Malaysia Undergraduate Skills Programme (USP) that is aimed to equip undergraduates with industry-relevant skills before graduation.

The 20-day long basic project management course (6 June 2011 – 1 July 2011) was aimed to assist students learn the fundamentals and best practices of project management methodology and master the skills required to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to specifications. Students were also expected to learn effective ways in communication, presentation and managing stakeholders effectively.

A total of 25 students who were completing their degrees under Keele University and diplomas from KDU UC were eligible for this training which covered two main sessions: Effective Communication and Project Management. The first session on communication which was conducted by Ms Susanna was truly an eye-opener for most students as they were not only taught how to write resumes but effective ones, present themselves professionally at work and handle interviews well. After the session, some students remarked that they are now much more vocal and no longer have the fear in attending interviews.

Encik Amin, who conducted the project management session, shared with the students his vast experiences on project management. Students were given rigorous tasks to put all concepts into practice. At the end of the course, students were given a main project to work on as a team. Topics selected by the students ranged from introducing the use of bio-fuels, organizing a Formula 1 race event, organizing a wedding event etc. were all presented with full confidence and professionalism. Students were subsequently presented with their certificate of attendance awarded by Multimedia Development Corporation (MDEC).

The Business Department looks forward to organising more of such events in the future to hone the students with more industry-driven skills over and above what they have learnt in their respective diploma and degree programmes.
