Study Visit to Central Bank

Once again, the Business lecturers of KDU took students on a study visit as they believed studying effectively sometimes, involves learning from outside the classroom. Students then can experience and understand the real world, relating back to their field of studies. This time around, the Microeconomics students had the chance to visit the Central Bank and also the "Sasana Kijang Museum and the Art Gallery". The visit took place at the Central Bank, Kuala Lumpur on 21st October 2011, lead by their lecturers; Ms. Tan Consilz and Mr. Ng Chin Hooi.

Study Visit to CCAS Sdn.Bhd

34 final semester students from KDU UC Diploma (Business Administration) and Keele University Degree Pogram (Marketing and Human Resource) had the chance to take on a ride to CCAS Sdn.Bhd, also formerly known as "Creative Communications & Advertising Services". The visit took place at their office, located in Kelana Square, on 18th November 2011. Mr.Loh Teck Hua (Lecturer, Business Department) initiated the study visit as he wants a different studying and learning environment, instead of the everyday-classroom lectures and tutorial. The students were very lucky to have this opportunity as they gained insight and knowledge on Marketing Communications from the experts themselves. The people from the agency were very warm and welcoming to the students. They fed students with relevant experience on real-life situations, as well as beneficial information directly from the company's focus and study cases.

Learning team building the fun way!

Written by Loh Teck Hua

Students learning the principles of team building in project management using hoops, cards, ropes, and in one activity, working on a task without exchanging a word to one another! Work and play can be one and the same! That is what active learning is all about.

KDU UC promotes active learning in all its academic programmes. The term ‘active learning’ is self-explanatory really. In brief, it means students are put in situations where they actively engage with the materials being taught. According to the theory, that will lead to better information recall. This is the opposite of the traditional lecture-room method where the lecturer talks and the students mostly listen and make notes.

Winds of change at Section 13 campus

Written by Loh Teck Hua, Lecturer, School of Business and Law

"We must always change, renew, rejuvenate ourselves, otherwise we harden."(Johann von Goethe)

Business is, more often than not, about adapting to changes and the challenges of the economic environment. It goes through cycles of growth and swings between the two poles of adversity and economic boom. But for the Business School everything seems to indicate an upswing phase to the story.

July 2011 saw the appointment of Dr. Dr. Victor Yu Sing Ong as the new Head of the School of Business and Law, KDU UC. Yes, the School of Business and the School of Law (SBL) have merged again after almost a year of separation. SBL is going through exciting times and after the good work put in by Dr Todd Nelson, the former Head of Business School, SBL looks set to reach new heights under the wings of Dr. Dr. Victor Yu. The good Dr ’s credentials are impressive to say the least.

Prior to him joining KDU University College, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Economics & Commerce of Hoa Sen University in Vietnam. He started his career in Wall Street in the 1980s. He subsequently moved to Singapore where he was instrumental in establishing and managing the Investment Management Unit of the Central Provident Fund. He has also held senior level positions as a Research Director and Vice President of Investment Banking of various financial institutions in Singapore. As an entrepreneur, he established a management consulting firm, with offices in Singapore and the Philippines, which provided corporate advisory services to both the private and public sectors. He was also managing a private educational institution in Singapore before moving to Vietnam.

The name of the game is ‘Togetherness’

Written by Mr Loh Teck Hua, School of Business

If you had been in the Business School on Friday 8th July, you would have experienced an unusual sight: students and lecturers getting down on the floor and getting dirty trying to outdo one another in games you probably wouldn’t have seen in a long time. Some of these are classic games your parents and their parents would have played when they were your age. Nice, clean, low-tech fun. MONOPOLY, UPWORD, CHINESE CHESS, JENGA, OTHELLO, UNO, CHESS, CHECKERS, BOOGLE SLAM, TWISTER, 5 STONES, DOMINOES, LUDO, SCRABBLE, etc.

Another Doctor in the house

Written by: Loh Teck Hua, Lecturer, School of Business and Social Sciences

Dr Todd Nelson getting serious again after a round of jokes

You hold staff meetings in the staff room, that's what the rule book says. Of course, if that is old school there is the conference room, the board room or the lecture theatre. Well, the KDU School of Business and Social Sciences (SBSS) did not go by the book this time – the staff meeting was held at Starbucks at Section 13! That's a novel way to loosen up, let yourself go and bond. More than just bonding the occasion was to formally – or informally – introduce Dr Goh Pek Chen, the new Academic Head, to the team from SBSS. And amongst those welcoming Dr Goh was another fresh, new face – Ms Angela Marcel Thexeira, the new Programme Leader for the Keele University programme. That was double the reason to rejoice. The atmosphere was made livelier by the heady aroma of freshly brewed Starbucks coffee and an array of light snacks.

Ho! Ho! Ho! Holiday Cheer

Written by: Loh Teck Hua, Lecturer
School of Business & Social Sciences

Who says lecturers are strict, stiff and stuffy? The Christmas turkey maybe, but not the Business School folks. When it is time to let their hair down, they can play as hard as any of their students! There’s festivity in the air and intoxication in a glass of lemonade!

It was just eight days before Christmas and the action has begun. The School of Business threw a small party for the teaching staff, the law lecturers - in fact, almost everyone in the Section 13 campus who was available at that time. It may be a potluck affair but the spread of food was plentiful, varied and mouth watering – sandwiches, cakes, jellies, fried noodles, pies, curry puffs, wine and crispy fried chicken sponsored by Dr Tan Hui Ling herself. Santa came too. He bore a strong resemblance to Dr Todd Nelson - talks like him, laughs like him and has a belly to match.

Gifts from Santa!

the students, sharing

Education - The Greatest Gift

Written by: Priscilla Phang
Murdoch University Bachelor of Commerce student
(Recipient of the Murdoch University Vice Chancellor's Commendation for Academic Excellence Award)

First of all, do allow me to express my gratitude to Murdoch University and KDU College for giving me this exclusive award. I feel very much humbled and would do my best to continue to excel and bring glory to both Murdoch University and KDU College.

Throughout my past one and a half years in KDU, I have realised that my decision in choosing Murdoch University and KDU College as my pathway to success is indeed a perfect one. This is because the courses are well structured and thought through, allowing me to develop both intellectually and emotionally, as well as in societal values. The tasks and projects are mentally challenging and encouraged me to think outside the box. Public speaking, presentations and speech delivery made me a more confident and eloquent individual. Besides that, the opportunities of working in teams added to my level of exposure, which I believe, would gradually prepare me for my future endeavors in the work environment.

INVIGORATING Inter-Varsity Case Study Challenge

Written by By: Salma Begum, Student, Bachelor of Commerce, Murdoch University

salma

On a boring day in January, our lecturer, Ms Claudine Robson, stepped into our class. In her sweet voice, she said, “There’s an exciting Inter-Varsity Case Study Challenge that requires some stimulating minds to participate. Would you take up the challenge?” No one responded; we were playing hard to get. “Please,” she pleaded. “We want KDUvers to join.” After a lot of persuasion, we relented. So Natasha Ann, Soo Xinghan, Chia Sue Ann and I decided to register online.

Indeed, the contest required more than some “stimulating minds”. It demanded ingenuity and the initiative to think out of the box. We had to problem-solve for Global Environmental Centre (GEC) giving practical, innovative solutions. These could stem from formulating recruitment strategies for new volunteers to productive fund-raising. With the help of Ms Jenny Kwee (lecturer), we submitted our plan without any further thought about it thereafter.

Suddenly, a month later, we received a call informing us that we have been selected as one of the top ten semi-finalist teams. It was a most pleasant surprise! Our reward was a two days all-expense paid trip to Kuala Gula in Perak plus some really cool laptop bags.

Kuala Gula is a village surrounded by huge tracts of mangrove swamps. When the tsunami hit some parts of Malaysia including Penang in 2004, Kuala Gula was not affected as mangroves offer protective barriers against the tsunami. The local folks volunteer for GEC and are known as Sahabat Hutan Bakau (Friends of the Mangrove). Our mission was to identify ways to help the local community to improve their lifestyles without damaging the environment, and that was our challenge to enter the finals.

We did our best for the challenge but we did not get through the semi-final. Nevertheless, it was an invigorating experience and it has definitely taught us some valuable lessons about the sedentary lifestyle of other Malaysians, and the importance of preserving the environment.
