If you had been in the Business School on Friday 8th July, you would have experienced an unusual sight: students and lecturers getting down on the floor and getting dirty trying to outdo one another in games you probably wouldn’t have seen in a long time. Some of these are classic games your parents and their parents would have played when they were your age. Nice, clean, low-tech fun. MONOPOLY, UPWORD, CHINESE CHESS, JENGA, OTHELLO, UNO, CHESS, CHECKERS, BOOGLE SLAM, TWISTER, 5 STONES, DOMINOES, LUDO, SCRABBLE, etc.
The true name of the game is really ‘togetherness’ – students and lecturers spending some quality time together, getting to know each other better outside the confines of the class room and bond. Friends listen to friends and friendship between students and lecturers paves the way to a better learning experience.
The idea was first mooted in 2010 when the first “Classic Games” activity was held and, according to students’ account, with resounding success. Organized by the SET Club (Student Entrepreneurship & Teamwork Club), one of the objectives of the games was to instill and promote unity, fellowship and well-being amongst its members and the college fraternity in general - including all the students in the Business School and the larger KDU University College community. The only difference this time around is that some of the current club members volunteered to help manage and run the Classic Games activities all on their own. This gave the members an opportunity to carry out the second objective of the club which is to develop members’ learning by integrating classroom knowledge with practical business application. Well, the Classic Games is not business, but leading, planning, organizing and running any activity is really the first step towards entrepreneurship. And doing all that is no child’s play!
Join the SET Club, too. And get ready, get set for fun and learning in one go!
