Engineering students show prowess at KDU’s School of Engineering Robot Competition 2015

The winning teams of SOE Robot Competition 2015 sharing their joy with Ir. Dr. Matthew Teow Yok Wooi (right in front row) and the organising committee

The School of Engineering (SOE) at KDU University College recently organised its inaugural ‘SOE Robot Competition 2015’ on 28th October 2015 at the atrium of the Utropolis Glenmarie campus. This internal school competition saw 5 teams competing to challenge their proficiency in programming and manoeuvring the new Arduino Robot.

The Arduino Robot is the first official Arduino on wheels. The robot has two processors, one on each of its two boards. The Motor Board controls the motors, and the Control Board reads sensors and decides how to operate. Both Motor and Control boards are microcontroller boards based on the ATmega32u4, a low-power Atmel 8-bit AVR RISC-based microcontroller. Each of the boards is a full Arduino board programmable using the Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE). The Robot has many of its pins mapped to on-board sensors and actuators.

Making changes of the Flora & Fauna at Zoo Negara

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), now plays a vital role in today's society, be it helping those in need, helping to restore the environment, and helping the welfare society. In KDU University College, students are often exposed to these voluntary movements and are very active in CSR projects. This time around, students from the UC Degree (Bachelor in Mass Communication), assisted by a few students from the Computing and Engineering students participated in a voluntary project to make change in the well-being of flora and fauna at the National Zoo on 2nd March 2012.

There were 21 students participated in this volunteer project

Design and Innovation Expo 2011

The Design and Innovation Expo returns again this year, with more innovative and creative designs. We salute the students effort, sweat and determination to complete their final year project, with the help of their lecturers and project supervisor.
The event took place at KDU, Damansara Jaya Campus Auditorium on 29 June 2011.

Let us all take a look on the happenings at the Expo:

Dr.Satesh (Head of School of Engineering) made the opening speech .

Student from current First Class (Hons.), Ong Toon Kim

"I did not have confidence from the start but, because of all the effort and hard work that I put in this project, I finally complete it and the result was great. During the stages of this project, there were a lot of difficulties and problems. However, the most important element here is the determination and interest in the particular project. We have to be clear on what we are doing throughout the whole process."

FIRST Lego League Championship - Team SMK BU 3, Go for Gold!

KDU UC’s School of Engineering (SoE) has adopted Sekolah Menengah Bandar Utama 3 (SMK BU3) for the FIRST Lego League Championship 2011 to be held on 19th February 2011.

With this adoption, SMK BU3’s team for this championship is being guided and advised from SoE’s lecturers. With this collaboration, the SMKBU 3’s team will use KDU sponsored Lego Mindstrom Kit. They will also be trained to operate the kit.

The dedicated teachers, Puan Asmani bt Morad and Cik Yusuiza bt Ahmad, have accompanied the team members to KDU UC for the training, the design and assembling of the prototype model of a robotic bio-medical carrier. Practising hard with a touch of humour in their presentation, this 10-member team is ready to go and give their best shot in the display and presentation of their lego model.

Dare to Defy Gravity?

It's school holidays again, and what can secondary school students do, to keep their minds intellectually focused on some wholesome activities?

The KDU's Engineering Expo of course! Held on 30 November 2010 the display of ingenious projects by the engineering students awed the secondary school students. It seemed that engineers can certainly think out of the box! There were gadgets to spin a mop, , a simple digital handheld Sudoku, an Accident Alarm system, Intelligent Eco-Friendly LED Street Lights and many more of these amazing models. The judges from the engineering industry must have had such a difficult time to award the prizes to the competitive winners. Anyway, the AVP SEA Best Project Award was for the Shake Flashlight.

The Way Forward for the School of Engineering

Written by: Farah Jasmine bt Abdul Jamel,
Lecturer, School of Engineering

KDU now is a University College. We are now moving forward and so is the School Of Engineering .We are going for a fresher look.

Flowing in that direction, on 19 November 2010, we invited Prof. Ir. Dr. Ramesh Singh to share his expertise with the School Of Engineering on Outcome Based Education(OBE).

Prof Ir. Dr Ramesh Singh

Prof Ir. Dr Ramesh Singh is currently the Director of the Research Management Centre and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Universiti Tenaga Nasional. He is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer registered with the Engineering Council UK, a Professional Engineer registered with the Board of Engineers Malaysia and Fellow of two prominent societies; the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, UK and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia. He is also an active panel member of the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) and has been since 2006. Getting ‘further insight’ information from an experience person like him has motivated the engineering team towards achieving our new goal.

Traditional Education (TE) vs. Outcome based Education (OBE)

The Malaysian education system has always adopted the Traditional Education (TE) approach. The term ‘spoon-feeding’ education has become synonymous with our education system. This approach has been proven to produce graduates who do not meet expectations or standards, upon commencing work in the industry. Lacking in soft skills, they are also unable to work independently, and they aren’t creative enough to provide engineering solutions. This is where OBE comes in. It’s a more innovative teaching and assessment approach where methods such as problem-based learning, project-based learning, case studies which includes literature searches, group projects and oral presentations are adopted.

Imagination overdrive for a cause

Written by By Benjamin Koh, Student, Diploma in Internet Technology

dot

“What is the Imagine Cup?” one might ask. Well, the Imagine Cup is a premier technology competition held annually by Microsoft - it’s the “World Cup of IT”! Each year teams are given different themes to presesnt how technology can provide solutions to make the world a better place.

This year’s theme was “Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems”. Being encouraged by our lecturer, Ms. Law, our team (.DOT: Kalvin Tan, Sofian and I) decided to join this year’s Imagine Cup.

In preparation, we did much research and discovered things we have never learnt before. It was a truly fun and exciting experience exposing us to technologies that none of our peers had even heard of or had the opportunity to use!

Our submission was a global social networking utility that connected people with problems to people with the resources to help them. We worked hard to develop our submission and to our pleasant surprise, we qualified for the grand finals in Pulau Langkawi.

Qualifying for the finals meant showcasing our work to Microsoft representatives, top industry professionals, investors and the press. We had envisioned a lot of formal presentations and technical work to be done, but we were in for a shocker! The competition was not just about presentations and technical work, it was a fun meeting with other technologically-inclined and passionate people, not to mention first rate games! We had treats too - a barbeque and Xbox 360 playing games such as Guitar Hero and Street Fighter with Microsoft staff! On the last day we went island hopping and sight seeing!

The good news which wrapped up the event was that we had emerged Top 29 from 1200 challengers.

Competitions like these make college life interesting, eventful and meet our inquisitiveness. We could strategically apply theories to this challenge with fun, and at the same time, it was for a good cause. The next Imagine Cup is just a few months away. You can register for it, and who knows, you may be the next ultimate winner.
