MDEC Competition brings out the best of young talents

When two students, both from School of Engineering, Science & Technology of KDU College this year became champions in Business Plan Category Competition organized by Multimedia Development Corporation (MDEC) and Institution of Higher Learning (IHLs) in Malaysia, the competition created awareness to students that ideas can be converted into commercial reality. Represented by Joshua Yam Weng Thai and Yeoh Huey Ling, the duo’s innovative business idea for SMS-Controlled Multi-Socket, greatly impressed the judges who comprised key personnels from Consulting Agencies and MSC status companies. The competition saw a notable participation of ICT enthusiasts, ranging from lecturers, graduates and undergraduates from non-academic or academia personnel.

With this success, the winners are now fast-tracked to be involved in technopreneur and enterprise development programmes such as the Pre-seed Jumpstart Workshop. The Workshop would train participants on how to improve on the current business plan and prepare them for the Pre-Seed Fund.

“At KDU College, we not only equip our students with technical skills but also our attributes such as organizational and critical thinking skills in order to stay competitive. At the same time, students learn to merge their ideas and capitalize them into business plan,” added Mr. Gerard Boey.

Lights! Camera! Edit!

Have you ever flipped through magazines and wished your pictures looked as good? At the recent ‘Shutterbug’ workshop, 30 students learned all about basic photography, studio lighting and Photoshop 101. The workshop was held at our photography studio, Shutter, and our Mac Lab, Pixel.

Lecturers Hardip Singh, Valen Foong and Sua Yen Nee guided the participants through the workshop which was broken down into three sessions.

The session started with Hardip explaining the functions of the studio lights and their placements, how to best position it to get the good shots and such.

Valen then took over by teaching the participants how to use the camera and what are the different functions for. The students were then paired up, and it was snap time! They took turns to be photographers and models, and posed to their heart’s content.

So You Want To Be A Radio DJ?

Nope, curiosity didn’t kill the cat, but it got the better of some students who participated in our ‘Radio DJ For A Day’ workshop held recently.

Conducted by lecturers Wong Lee Sa, Ruly Bitay Cagadas and Hilmyzam Zainal Aripin, the workshop kicked start with Ruly sharing his experiences as a DJ for over 10 years, what it takes to be one and most importantly, the fun fun FUN!

Soon after, participants were brought into our recording studio, Creative Waves, to record a prepared script. But, who likes to sound the same, right? So, some students took the initiative to edit the script to their own style instead, which made the recording more interesting.

Are You 'Game' Enough?

30 secondary students recently got a chance to unleash their inner gamer at the ‘Unleashing The Gamer In You’ workshop held during our Open Day.

Conducted by lecturer Law Foong Li and her TECH@KDU team of students Benjamin Koh, Onneile Joyce, Hon Herng, Viventhraa and Teck Yan, the 2-hour long workshop kicked off with a small tournament on the Tic-Tac-Toe game which applies Multipoint technology.

The objective of having the tournament was so the participants could grasp the concept of Multipoint SDK (Software Development Kit). It also helped to create mental and physical readiness (read: setting the mood) for students to take part in the programming session.

So, what did the students learn?

The Concept of Multipoint SDK
Multipoint SDK allows multiple mice to access a single PC, which means application created by using Multipoint SDK can support multiple students working on a single PC at the same time.

Programming
Students also learned how to use Microsoft Visual Studio 2008, and with help, created a simple quiz-game application using Multipoint SDK.

At the end of the workshop, everyone was engrossed in playing with their customized quiz application.
